Visit from Bream Bay College Students

IPL recently hosted a lab visit for 4 students in their final year of study at Bream Bay College.

They started their visit at the Refining NZ Visitor Centre where they gained a better understanding of the refining processes and they then made their way onsite to visit the biggest petroleum lab in New Zealand.

IPL showed the students how the testing links to the refining processes and in turn, to the curriculum addressed throughout the year by their teacher. IPL also touched based on Oil & Gas testing, Environmental testing and on another big ticket item which is Health & Safety. We introduced the students to our very impressive, crude assay equipment, which we hope provided them with a better understanding of the distillation processes and that their lab visit overall provided a realistic idea of what life as a lab technician looks like.

Our staff could tell right from the start that the students shared a mutual passion for the Sciences. We had lots of good questions throughout the visit and a couple of BBC students from the group are definitely looking to pursue their studies in Science. We wish them all the best with their future learning, and perhaps our paths will cross again.

Thumbs up for great community initiatives and hopefully the first of many more to come!

Solid Biofuel - Heavy Metals and Hg Analysis

The determination of heavy metals can be helpful to predict potential contamination caused by combustion of the biofuel. If ashes are to be put back in the forest as fertiliser, it’s important to be aware of those elements that can be harmful to the environment. Regular checks can be useful to help identify purity of the product.

IPL can test your solid biofuel by ICP for Arsenic, Boron, Chromium, Copper, Lead and Zinc and uses its DMA to quantify Mercury to a sensitivity of 20ppt (ng/kg)

Although these test currently aren’t part of the Technical Guide for standard testing methods for solid biofuels, they help assess the quality and purity of the solid biofuel.

If you wish to include as part of your quality assurance testing schedule, please contact us.
